Math Story Origin of the Meter
About 200 years ago, France had over 400 types of rulers. French people
were confused, because everyone used different types of rulers. To solve this
problem, the French government came up with a basic unit of measurement
for everyone called the meter.
1 meter was set to be 1 of the distance between the North Pole

and the South Pole. This is very close to the length of 1 meter that we use
today.
