A pork barrel project refers to a building project which benefits only a few people but
which is paid with public taxes. Pork barrel projects are supported by powerful
politicians who need votes and prepare money in the government’s budget for the
project. For example, the Ketchikan bridge was built only for 8,000 people. Any
society with a democratic government has pork barrel projects. Japan’s bullet trains
are one of them.
