Unit 1 The Titanic

Reading Comprehension

Tommy: Tell me about the Titanic, Grandma.

Grandma: It was the biggest ship in the world, Tommy. It was also a strong
boat. People said, “This boat cannot sink.” It was nice on the inside. It had a
swimming pool, a sauna, libraries, and restaurants. It was a really beautiful ship.
On April 10, 1912, the Titanic left England. There were 2,223 people on the
Titanic, and they were going to New York City. For a few days, it was a good trip.
They enjoyed their comfortable trip. But trouble soon came.

Tommy: What happened?

Grandma: There were big icebergs in the sea. The Titanic hit one of the
icebergs. Water filled the inside of the boat. People got into lifeboats. But there
were too many people. “Women and children first,” said the captain. So women
and children went into the lifeboats. But most men did not. The Titanic sank into
the sea. It was very cold that night. Many people died in the water. This is a very

sad story.
