Unit 1 The ‘Curse’ of Tutankhamun
Listening Comprehension
The pharaoh Tutankhamun, or king Tut, is probably the most famous of all the
Egyptian pharaohs. There are several reasons for this. First, Tutankhamun was
pharaoh at a time when Egypt was a very powerful kingdom. Another reason is
that his tomb held lots of gold and many jewels, probably more than any other
Egyptian pharaoh. But the most interesting reason for King Tut‟s fame may be
his „curse‟.
Like all of their pharaohs, the Egyptian made Tutankhamun into mummy and
filled his tomb with gold and jewels when he died. Then they sealed his tomb.
Some stories say that the Egyptians put a curse on his tomb to keep people from
stealing the gold and jewel inside. In 1922, An Englishman, Lord Carnarvon,
found king Tut‟s tomb, opened it, and took the gold and jewels out of it. A few
weeks later, Lord Carnarvon died suddenly.
Was King Tut‟s curse to blame? Many people thought it was. Today, however,
we know more about King Tut‟s tomb, and the story of the curse now seems
unlikely. King Tut‟s tomb was thousands of years old, so the air inside was very
bad. The dust inside held dangerous germs, and they were probably what made
Lord Carnarvon sick. However, many people still believe in the curse of king Tut.
