Basic Concepts Sam Loyd Puzzle

Sam Loyd (1841-1911) was a famous mathematician and puzzle author.
He made many interesting puzzles that remain popular worldwide today.
The picture on the right is one of the puzzles Sam Loyd
made. You can rearrange the pieces in different ways to
make the shape of a rectangle, right triangle, parallelogram
or cross.
Example Use the pieces on the left to make a cross.

Class Notes

The only way the blue piece can fit into the cross is shown on the
right. Therefore, the smaller right triangle can fit in , and the
square can fit either in or .

Fit in the remaining two pieces after you figure out where to place
the square. Draw the final arrangement of pieces in the figure on the
right.

Try It Again Use the pieces of the given square to make a rectangle.
