Basic Concepts The Order of Weights

Use a balance to compare objects with different weights at a time, to find
the heaviest object. Then you can find the order of the weights, from
heaviest to lightest.

The order of the weights from heaviest to lightest is , , and .
When there are several objects with different weights, choose one object
as a standard by which you can compare the weights of the objects.

On the balance and , weighs the same as 4 . On the balance ,
when you replace 1 with 4 , 1 weighs the same as 6 . Therefore,
the order of the weights from heaviest to lightest is , , , and .
Example Three apples, , , and , are placed on the balance as shown

below. Write the order of weights from heaviest to lightest.

Class Notes

On the balance , weighs the same as multiplied by .

On the balance , since is (lighter, heavier) than 2 , then is (lighter, heavier)
than . Therefore, the heaviest apple is .

On the balance, , between and , is heavier than . Therefore, the 2nd heaviest

apple is .

Therefore, the order of the weights of the apples from heaviest to lightest is , ,
and .
