Basic Concepts Using the Least Number of Weights
If you use one side of the balance to weigh objects Object 4 g2 g
from 1 to 15 grams, you need weights 1 g, 2 g, 4 g, 2 4 6g
and 8 g each. 3g
If you use both sides of the balance to weigh objects Object 9g
from 1 to 13 grams, you need weights of 1 g, 3 g, and
9 g each. 9 3 6g
Example You can use weights of 1 g, 3 g, and 9 g to weigh all objects from
1 g to 13 g on a balance. Complete the table below. (Weights can
be placed on either side of the balance.)
1g 1 6g 11 g 9 3 1
2g 3 1 7g 12 g
3g 8g 13 g
4g 9g
5 g 9 3 1 10 g
Class Notes
The following diagrams show how to measure objects from 1 g to 13 g. Complete the
blanks using numbers or operation symbols ( , ).
