Cutting Squares to Make Right Angles
Draw 2 lines on the square shown below and make 4 quadrilaterals,
each with 1 right angle.

Step 1. In square A, the lines do not
meet inside the square. In
square B, the lines meet on the
side of the square. How many
shapes are made in each
case?

Step 2. Draw 2 lines that meet at a point inside the
square. How many shapes are made?

Step 3. How many right angles does a square have?

Step 4. How many right angles do you need to make 4 quadrilaterals, each
with 1 right angle?

Step 5. In Step 3 and Step 4 , we learned that we must not make any new
right angles with the two lines. Draw two lines that meet at a point
inside the square without making any new right angles and making
4 quadrilaterals that each have 1 right angle.
