Unit 3 READING 2

D o you like to give flowers and chocolate to
friends and family? Or do you like to get
flowers and chocolate? You can do both on
Valentine’s Day. People all over the world
celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th. It’s an
important day because people show their love to
the important people in their lives. They give
flowers, chocolate, and other romantic gifts like
jewelry. People usually think that boyfriends and
girlfriends are the only ones to celebrate
Valentine’s Day. Of course, this is not true. You can express your love to
many different people.

No one knows the true beginning of the holiday. (a) People have many
different stories. Some say the Roman Emperor Claudius jailed a priest. His
name was Valentine. (b) In jail, Valentine wrote a letter to a special person.
(c) This person helped him during the difficult days in jail. She gave
Valentine food and love. (d) The last words of the letter were “From Your
Valentine.” We still use these same words.

English Usage

• subject + verb + indirect object + direct object
- Many verbs can have two objects - usually a person and a thing.
I gave John the keys. (= I gave the keys to John.)
Father bought my sister the ice-cream.
