D o you know the following names? New
Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys,
*NSYNC, Britney Spears, Hilary Duff. They are
all young singers, and they are called
teenage idols . They sing for teenagers.
Teenagers call them idols because they admire
them. Teenagers want to be like them. They
are cool, attractive, talented, and famous.
People also call them “Bubblegummers.” The
songs are light and fun like bubble gum. When
they are popular, the singers and the songs become big like bubble gum,
and when they are not popular any more, they pop like bubble gum.

It is difficult to become a teenage idol. (a) You need to be attractive and
talented, and you need to get a contract from a record company. (b) It is
stressful to be a teenage idol. Teenagers become impatient quickly. (c) One
day, they might like someone, and the next day they might hate the group or
the singer. (d) The music industry cares more about money than the people.
They want to make a lot of money. They care about the groups and the
singers if they are popular. If they are not, then people ignore them. Sadly,
many teenage idols disappear fast. One day they are famous, and the next
day they are gone.

English Usage

• not ~ any more : If you want to say that something that happened in the past
does not happen now, you say that it does not happen any more.
Ralph can’t hurt us any more.
I’m not helping Harry any more.
