Unit 1 READING 1

T oday in Texas, a new law has been
passed. It says that all high school
athletes must be tested for *steroids.
Steroids make athletes play better. But
(a) they are dangerous drugs. The new
law was made
among high school athletes. Actually,
Texas is not the first state to start steroid testing for (b) them. In 2006, New
Jersey first started the testing. But Texas will have the country’s largest high
school testing program. (c) It will make more than 20,000 high school

athletes take a test for steroids. For the first *offense, athletes will not be
allowed to play sports for 30 days. For the second offense, they will not

be allowed to play sports for 90 days. For the third (d) one, they will be
banned from playing sports games ever again. Now, many people
support the steroid testing. However, the cost of it is the biggest
problem: a single test can be from $110 to $175.

*steroid: a chemical used by athletes to play better
*offense: a crime that breaks a law
