Unit 4 READING 2
M ost people believe that they will help if someone is being attacked.
However, according to the “*bystander effect” they might not. This is
when a large group of people sees someone in trouble, but nobody does
anything about it. The murder of Kitty Genovese in 1964 has been studied as
a famous example of the bystander effect. Genovese was attacked by a robber
on a New York street, and she screamed for about 30 minutes. The people
who saw her didn’t do anything until she died. ?
There are a few explanations. In a large group, people tend to feel less
responsible. They feel that someone else will help the victim. Another
reason is because most people do like everyone else in a group. If no one
else helps the victim, then a bystander may hesitate to help the victim.
Finally, many people are afraid of what might happen if they try to help.
* bystander: someone who watches an event without taking part
English Usage
• present progressive passive form : am/are/is + being + p.p.
This book is being sold well because he is a naturally good salesman.
• present perfect passive form : have/has been + p.p.
The room has been cleaned.
