Parts and Whole
It is not easy for children to look at parts of an object and guess the whole
object. Reasoning and logic can be developed in tasks such as when
students look at parts of vegetables and fruit as their parents are cooking
and try to figure out what the whole object is.
Knowing the relationship of parts and the whole, that parts make a whole
and that a whole can be split into parts, is a lead-in to fractions in the 2nd
grade curriculum.
