Reading Comprehension

Some people don't eat meat. They're vegetarians. What do they eat? Why do
they become vegetarians? How do they get enough protein?

There are different kinds of vegetarians. Some eat fish and chicken. Some
don't eat any meat all. Others don't even eat dairy products. They don't drink
milk or eat cheese. They don't eat animal products at all. Then why would
someone give up meat?

Some people become vegetarians for health reasons. Vegetarians eat lots of
fruits and vegetables. These foods have many health benefits. They digest much
quicker than meat. So vegetarians don't have as many stomach problems. Also,
vegetarian diets have little fat. This means vegetarians are less likely to be
overweight. And they are more likely to have strong hearts.

Some people become vegetarians for other reasons. They believe it’s wrong to
eat animals. For them, it’s cruel to raise animals for food. Other people believe
raising animals for food is bad for the environment. For example, farmers need a
lot of water. Also, the animals make a lot of waste. The waste makes pollution.

Most people get their protein from meat. But vegetarians get protein from
beans and nuts. Tofu also has lots of protein. Besides that, many people eat
vegetarian-friendly meat. They have burgers, chicken and bacon. But this “meat”
is made from soybeans. So it’s not really meat at all.
