Q: What is the ordinal number that comes between third and fifth?
A: Fourth
A number that expresses the “third” is “three.” A number that expresses the “fifth” is “five.” And the
number that comes between “three” and “five” is “four.” So the ordinal number for “four” is “fourth.”
Q: When you count from first to fifth, do the numbers become larger or smaller?
A: The numbers become larger.
If you express first to fifth in order, you say first, second, third, fourth, and fifth. If you express these as
numbers, you get 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The value of numbers from one to five increase, and so does the value
of the ordinal numbers.
