Activity 1 Coordinate Plane

Learn about the coordinate plane and ordered pairs.

A plane formed by a horizontal line (x-axis) and a vertical line (y-axis) is the
coordinate plane.
The point where the x-axis and the y-axis meet is the origin.
An ordered pair is a pair of numbers used to locate a point on a coordinate
plane. The x-coordinate tells how many units to move horizontally, and the
y-coordinate tells how many units to move vertically.

(8,4)

x-coordinate y-coordinate

1 . Identify the ordered pair for each animal.

7 Find the location of the
6 rabbit.
Go 8 units to the right
along the x-axis from the
5 origin.

y-axis 4 The x-coordinate is 8.

3 Then go 4 units up from
the origin along the y-axis.

2 The y-coordinate is 4.

1 So the rabbit is at (8, 4).
