The history of silhouettes

A silhouette is the outline of a person or an object as it casts a shadow.
The word silhouette derives from the name of French Finance Minister,
Etienne de Silhouette. During the war in the 18th century, France’s credit
crisis imposed severe economic demands upon the French people,
particularly the wealthy. Mr. Silhouette tried to reduce the material costs
portraits; cutting profiles from black cards was a cheaper way of recording a
person’s appearance. The minister, Silhouette allowed the aristocrats to use
only black paper. However, the aristocrats were against him and he had to
resign from his job after eight months in his position.

The aristocrats are
wasting so much!

I have to let them use
only black ink when
they are drawing.
