“Cups of Memories” was originally a computer illustration. Many years ago, not long after Craig had died, I had taken a course at George Washington University to learn how to work in Adobe Illustrator. The professor wanted us to illustrate a still life with objects in our home. I chose to use the mugs that Craig and I had collected over the years. After I completed the project and turned in my assignment, I was driving to work the next morning and a poem popped into my head. Once I arrived at Washington Hospital Center, I ran inside and wrote it down. It goes like this:
It is just some empty cups in the cupboard That would otherwise be bare
They sit and wait in darkness there
When you think you are over the worst of it Open that innocent door and see
Each cup filled with its own special memory And as they come closer into view
You see them overflowing with thoughts of joy
Mixed with pain
So suddenly with sadden heart
You close that cupboard door
But they know you will be back again
