Noodling and Mining
The public noodling area is open to
the public. If you are not on a pegged
claim and do not use a pick, shovel or
any digging device, then a permit is not
required. Trespassers on claims can be
fined. If you wish to mine in anyway using
tools, machinery or explosives, a precious
stones prospecting permit must be
obtained from the Mines & Energy Office.

Big Winch
This 8m high structure which overlooks the
town was built by Klaus Wirries in the 1970’s to
celebrate the Opal Capital of the World. The Big
Winch was rebuilt after it was destroyed by fire
in 1986.

Coober Pedy
Opal Fields Golf Club
This 18-hole, 72 par grass-less golf course
appears in various list of the top 10 most
unusual golf courses in the world. Golfers use
a piece of artificial grass to tee off. The putting
greens, called scrapes, are oiled down sand Coober Pedy
which is raked smooth.
