Social Media Musings – Part III My Reflections on the Practice and Life
don’t dare complain about them. That’ll do you no good.
The longer you stand on the diving board, the less likely you’ll jump.
Self improvement is contagious. Work on you, and those around you may well follow suit.
There’s a difference between fear and lack of talent. Your talents (or lack of a given talent) should push you toward and pull you away paths. Your fears should not.
Success requires failure. Avoid failure, avoid success.
Each of us toils daily at our jobs and our professions. But those moments where through a word or a deed we can transform another, change their trajectory much like
a cue ball striking a billiard ball, putting them on a path of self improvement and enlightenment, those are the moments that make the hard work worthwhile.
Good listeners are complete listeners.
Have you ever been with a person who
has complete recall of things you say that affect him but can’t remember a thing about things you say that affect you? When listening to others, listen to them completely. It’ll enhance your personal and business relationships.
We keep finding ourselves saying “What’s the plan?” For those of us involved in voluntary bar associations, non profits, school boards and houses of worship, we keep asking others, “I understand you think
bad things won’t happen, but if they do, what’s the plan?” Schools which didn’t think they needed to close had to scramble to get a plan. Churches who didn’t think they needed to close had to scramble to get a plan. Having a plan is not being pessimistic. It’s being a good steward. Plan for the worst, and if it doesn’t happen, consider it a blessing. And if it does, you’re ready for it.
One morning, I was listening to the Mayor of Chicago, who made a comment I have often read Jonathan Pollard make in his posts - No one is coming to save you. She said as a black woman in Chicago, she learned at an early age that no one was coming to save her and that attitude has helped immensely in her life and now, as the leader of the city. Amidst all this, let’s approach this reality with a twofold attitude:
◗ No one is coming to save us
◗ We have a responsibility to save others. Stay safe.
Adversity makes us who we are. These challenging and uncertain times will build our character and strengthen our resolve.
I tell my boys when they express concern over a decision, obstacle or failure - “Everything is going to be fine. Or it won’t. And that’s fine too.”A lot of young lawyers ask me, will I get fired? Maybe. Can I lose
my job? Maybe. Does my boss not like me? Maybe. Even if any of the bad things happen, will it be ok? Will it be ok even when it’s not? Yes. Eventually, but yes. Yes it will. Sooner or later, sometimes later, sometimes much later, it’ll be fine.
