Social Media Musings – Part III My Reflections on the Practice and Life
  The COVID 19 Pandemic
COVID-19 has taught law firms we can work remotely, and if we can work remotely, then a lawyer can be anywhere in the world to contribute to a firm and serve its clients, and if so, American firms will realize they can hire foreign lawyers from around the world to do their research, writing, analysis and other legal tasks.
The mother of my legal assistant, Marilyn Pedraza, works at a Walmart supermarket near my house. Whenever I’ve been there to shop lately, she’s been there, whether early in the morning or late in the evening. There are so many working long hours to ensure we are being fed during these times. Take the time to thank them when you see them.
Take the time to e-mail, text, instant message, or call your contacts and check in on them during this pandemic.
`As your firm deals with the Coronavirus, solicit ideas from your team and listen to them even if you decide not to incorporate their proposals.
Clients have a lot of questions about the Coronavirus. Your law firms should consider one or more of the following:
◗ Webinars
◗ Podcasts
◗ Q & A Conference Calls
◗ E-newsletters
◗ Lists
As much as possible, create and stick to a schedule while working from home.
With the economic slowdown, it’s tempting to accept cases you’re not qualified to handle. Don’t. The retainer is enticing, but the consequences can be serious.
Don’t be surprised under the current circumstances, especially in Florida, if judges order most if not all matters to Mediation within 90 days. With all the uncertainty
due to COVID-19, including the financial insecurity, and trials being pushed off, it would be a quick way for judges to reduce caseloads and for cases that may not have settled otherwise to settle.
COVID-19 has changed everything. Some changes will be permanent. Some will be temporary. Think through what you expect will return to normal and what won’t, and prepare accordingly.
Think through your firm’s marketing plan
if it turns out conference travel will be unavailable for the remainder of the year due to COVID-19.
If your firm or voluntary bar association is considering giving back, consider PPE and food drives.
COVID 19 is causing isolation among our peers. Take the time to reach out to others at your firms and keep them connected.
