Personally, I have been gratified by just trying to do a good, albeit small, thing for others. The lessons that have been reinforced are that the act of giving is comforting; thinking of how one might effectively help another takes a person out of self and into community; and working with people who want to help others is heartening due to the sense of caring collaboration.
Serving The Community During The Pandemic
“The unselfish effort to bring cheer to others will be the beginning of a happier life for ourselves.”
Helen Keller
B eginning in April 2020, my wife, Holly, and I had to quarantine for approximately four weeks. Though separated from family, friends, co-workers, etc., we had the company of each other and two spoiled cats. The isolation from everyone else provided time to consider the needs of others and highlighted the importance of
community – our shared brotherhood and sisterhood.
On April 12, severe thunderstorms and at least one tornado with winds up to 120 mph ravaged the Chattanooga area and left at least 9 dead, 20 hospitalized, and dozens among dozens homeless due to the loss of around 150 buildings (50 were Alzheimer’s patients at an assisted living facility).
