Looking Back
WhenMikeGlascott emailed the I-3 Committee in May 2020 suggesting that we consider an off- year Virtual I-3 to address the impact of COVID-19 on the Insurance Industry, we responded enthusiastically, but naturally assumed that the pandemic would
be in our (distant)
rearview mirror byNovember2020. Weeven
questioned whether anyone would still be talking about COVID-19 by November. FDCC Member Marty Lavelle, Managing Counsel, Claim Legal Liability/Major Case, with The Travelers Companies, Inc., and a member of our steering committee, looked us straight in the (Zoom) eye and said, “Oh, it will still be relevant. Trust me...
we will still be working remotely in November.”
Needless to say, Mr. Lavelle was correct, so by the time the virtual curtain went up on November
5, we had over 450 attendees registered for the 8 virtual programs. The2020I-3wasfully virtual, fully free, and open to all members, their firms and clients. It offered 8 hours of CLE, along with timely, insightful papers and pithy PowerPoints on the presentations. All of the programs, papers and PowerPoints are available on “FDCC On Demand” for viewing. If you have not seen them already (or want to watch them again), you can watch the following by clicking on the “Digital Newsroom,” tab then
clickingon“FDCConDemand,” and then clicking on “Webinars” and scrolling down the webinars until you find the 2020 I-3 program.
The I-3 format was the brainchild of our own Executive Director Bernie Heinze, who not only
vetted the vendor, but also pivoted quickly to address technical issues with our sponsors prior to the presentation. The result was a seamless, pre-recorded program with live question and answer sessions for each presentation. The implementation of the program fell to Jessica Highley and our impressive home office team, who

coordinated the recording (and re- recording) of 35 presenters across 7 time zones and 3 continents.
The virtual format allowed us
to present speakers that would likely not have been available for a live presentation in New York, particularly in 2020!
Programming
The Insurance Industry has faced
andaddressedanenormous number of challenges in the past 10 months, including pandemic- related claims, property damage claims related to the widespread race-related protests, weather- related events and a six-month backlog from tolled statutes of limitation. The year has been truly unprecedented from a ratings, underwriting, regulatory, legislative and claims perspective. The Virtual I-3 offered a rare glimpse into the Industry’s real- time response to this crisis.
The program featured the presentations such as:
• Steven Weisbart, Ph.D.,
Chief Economist, Insurance Information Institute discussed trends and challenges facing the industry in the face of the pandemic.
• Lauren Curtis led a discussion among the senior leadership of AmeriTrust Group, Inc., Arch Insurance Group, Inc., Chubb Group, and Lloyd’s North America on their efforts to respond to the pandemic, implement remote work and the rapid pace of change in the industry.
• Bernie Heinze interviewed A.M. Best’s Chief Ratings Officer Stefan Holzberger on the current state of the Market, the A.M. Best Market Segment Outlooks, and how A.M. Best is assessing the ratings in the wake and aftermath of the pandemic.
• FDCC Members presented a lightning round discussion of
