David Naylor High Performance Manager REVIEW
HIGH PERFORMANCE PROGRAM
After months of negotiations, The Basketball WA High Performance Program continues to play an important role in the State in the education and training of athletes and coaches. The Basketball WA High Performance Department undertook a review against National and State outcomes which resulted in a revamped 2018-19 State Performance Program (SPP).
Basketball WA also continued to operate Basketball Australia’s National Performance Program (NPP), with the focus to develop players who have the potential to represent Australia at the International level.
STATE PERFORMANCE PROGRAM
The State Performance Program identifies the State’s most talented athletes and creates an intensive training environment that will “develop and prepare young basketball athletes to represent WA” at an Australian Junior Championship. Basketball WA believes that the establishment of a direct pathway for athletes in the SPP into the State Team Program will improve the quality of State Team performance into the future. The 2020/21 SPP consisted of four camps involving both Country and Metro athletes, with the age groups separated in to U16’s and U18’s to accommodate the increase in scholarship
holders. Athletes were also required to attend weekly/fortnightly sessions under the supervision of network coaches.
The role of the Department of Sport’s Regional Talent Development Programs (RTDP), along with Regional Academies continue to assist regional athletes and coaches. Basketball WA athletes received support from the Peel Regional Academy of Sport (PRAS), the Mid West Academy of Sport (MWAS) and the Great Southern Sports Talent Association (GSSTA).
NATIONAL PERFORMANCE PROGRAM
This program continues to cater for the top tier of athletes within WA that have been identified to have the potential to represent Australia. The NPP continues to provide support to those athletes striving towards National Representation.
In consultation with Basketball Australia, the following athletes were awarded NPP scholarships:
• Jayda Clark (Warwick)
• Ruby Vlahov (Perry Lakes)
• Mia Jacobs (Lakeside)
• Ethan Elliott (Warwick)
• Ben Henshall (Cockburn)
• Thomas Snelgrove (Perry Lakes) • Josh Ibukunoluwa (Willetton)
• Connor Morris (Perry Lakes)
