                                CELEBRATING NAIDOC
Basketball WA worked alongside some of our indigenous partners Pioneers Aboriginal Corporation, Koya Aboriginal Corporation and Boordiya Moort to enable the NAIDOC carnival on Monday July 5 and Tuesday July 6. However due to Covid restrictions implemented by the State Government, the carnival was postponed to 16 and 17 July 2021.
2021's NAIDOC event aligned with the NAIDOC message of “HEAL COUNTRY, heal our nation.” Basketball WA worked closely with the NAIDOC Carnival Indigenous Patrons Council to help guide our approach and activities to 2021's carnival and through this vehicle established meaningful relationships allowing us to start conversations on how to help Heal Country.
The carnival supported multiple age divisions starting with U12’s and finishing with U25’s. Round robin games were played across both days, with Finals held on the second day.
A special mention to be given to Sharne Hayden who did a wonderful Welcome to Country. The day was well received by the communities and also saw the inclusion of extra activities to include
a 3x3 Court activation in the foyer, sausage sizzle (thanks to supplier Rachel Mills from Armadale Alliance) and complimentary fruit (donated by Wembley IGA) to name a few. The official BWA artwork designed by Angel Smith was also presented at the closing and now hangs in the foyer of Bendat.
A special acknowledgement to the Team Coordinators for their efforts in bringing their teams together during this Covid world - Donna Nelson, Jaymea Riley, Krystal Bell, Michael Mongoo, Robyn Hayden, Sonia Smith, Isaiah Wally- Stack, Danielle Champion, Helen Wally Stack.
Thank you also to our sponsors Healthway and DLGSC.
