NWBL AND WNWBL SEASON STARTED BUT CANCELLED AGAIN IN 2021
The National Wheelchair Basketball League (NWBL) is Australia’s national championship league and has been running since 1988. The Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League (WNWBL) would have celebrated 20 years of play in 2022 after missing the previous two years, having been running since 2000. This was also the first time in the history of both leagues that a season had to be cancelled.
The leagues which run in concurrence with one another, were originally scheduled to commence May and run through to August 2022 with finals to follow.
The NWBL did tip off this season completing 3 rounds prior to the season beingplacedonholdasCOVID-19posed uncertainties, interstate travel restrictions tightened and then the season being cancelled as it proved too difficult to complete.
With very few Australian Wheelchair Basketball athletes playing in overseas leagues, the NWBL and WNWBL continues to be the key opportunity for the Australian Rollers and Gliders athletes to work on their game. The athletes are able to take advantage of the National Wheelchair League seasons to aid in their preparations and training for upcoming international competitions such as the Tokyo Paralympics.
