HOTSHOTS PROGRAM
2021 saw the continued delivery of the U12’s Hotshots Skill Days. Hotshots is the first step on the BWA High Performance pathway. Hotshots engages athletes in fun skill-based drills and small sided competition. Hotshots was delivered in both metropolitan and country regions across the state. 2021 saw the participation of over 200 athletes in the program. Regions from all across the state assisted in the facilitation of the Hotshots Skill days.
Unfortunately due to Covid-19, the Hotshots Jamboree was unable to go ahead. Ordinarily the Jamboree brings together 120 athletes and coaches from all across the state to participate in further expanding their skills and understanding required to be successful in the game of basketball.
FUTURE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
2021 saw a restructure of the FDP, moving to a camp based format. This allowed the program to be attended by a larger portion of regional athletes, making it a truly state wide program; and strengthening the pool of talented athletes that compete for positions in State Teams.
200 boys and girls across the U14 age groups attended FDP Skill Sessions for the opportunity to be a part of the Future Development Program squads. 30 different coaches assisted with the program, providing various insights and expertise to the athletes.
The Future Development Program took in 60 female and 60 male athletes, which attended the camps at Bendat Basketball Centre. During each camp athletes were exposed to guest speakers who provided content and discussion around areas such as nutrition, mental health, strength and conditioning, and concepts associated
with Basketball WA’s style of play. This was done by placing them in a fail-safe and competitive environment, so that they develop the tools and knowledge to be successful at elite levels.
Countless athletes that have been through the FDP program have been successful in being selected for Southern Cross Challenge and the State Performance Program, and recognition from Basketball Australia.
EMERGING TALENT PROGRAM
In 2021 we continued the Emerging Talent Program. This program bridges the gaps in our FDP and SPP programs, by continuing to work with those athletes who are on the fringe of selection. Male and female athletes from U13’s, U15’s and U17’s attended sessions throughout the year, continuing to work on their individual skills as well as BWA Style of Play. Even though the 2021 program was disappointingly cut short due to Covid-19, a number of athletes who participated in the 2021 program have been selected in to 2022 SPP Squads.
REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Basketball WA High Performance staff made numerous trips into the regional areas and were able to engage with regional associations across areas such as coach development, referee development, and talent identification. In addition to these trips, our regional staff have been working diligently in their respective regions, to build sustainable development programs across multiple age groups. This has seen a growth of representation in to our High Performance programs from as far north as Derby, to Esperance in the south.
