COACH DEVELOPMENT
AND EDUCATION
Damian Barr Coach Education and Development Manager
2021 WAS ABOUT ACCESSIBILITY AND VALUE ADDING FOR THE
BWA COACH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
The ongoing COVID situation understandably had a huge impact on our ability to coach and play basketball, however it forced coaches to get creative with their own development. The lockdowns and restrictions saw many coaches take to the internet to seek out clinics, video and mentoring to further their own development.
BWA was no different. Our Community Coach course continued to be available as an online platform. Using video examples and online resources coaches were able to receive an official accreditation from within their homes. Not only did over 100 coaches jump at this opportunity, but accreditation from every single region followed. The initiative has been highly successful and popular throughout the coaching community. The ability for regions to access education material that was previously inaccessible continues to be instrumental in the growth of regional basketball and the development of its players and coaches.
Along with the accessibility of the online CommunityCoachcourse,BWAwasable to present several Club Coach courses across the state, with several being run in the Metro area, along with courses in Geraldton, Albany and Karratha. We’re looking froward to adding to those regional areas in 2022 with plans to run courses in Bunbury, Busselton, Kalgoorlie and more throughout this year.
The BWA Coaches Facebook page received record high engagement with
daily drills, articles and videos. The available videos, clinics, skills and drills breakdowns continues to grow on the site with it becoming a valuable resource to all coaches across the state.
We were also able to partner with the Perth Wildcats to bring two clinics to WA coaches, Mike Kelly (Perth Wildcats Associate Head Coach) and Luke Brennan (Perth Wildcats Assistant Coach) presented a defensive masterclass to, what was at the time, the largest live audience of coaches ever to attend a clinic. That record stood for a couple of months before newly appointed Perth Wildcats Head Coach Scott Morrison joined his staff to present a clinic to over 200 coaches.
Our regional visits were slowed down due to travel restrictions, but we were still able to get out to remote areas like Moora and Narrogin before we closed shop. BWA’s link with schools expanded into delivering Community and Club courses in more than 7 secondary schools, as well as the Curtin University education faculty, allowing new PE graduates to have basketball coaching accreditations along with their degrees.
