One of the highlights of the year was the introduction of the PMBL Player’s League in the 2020 Spring Season as well
as the PMBL’s sponsorship agreement with Varsity Group Australia who have provided additional funding to the com- petition. The Player’s League is focused on providing players with a higher level of competition and professionalism and was received very well by the players. The inaugural Player’s League Season saw 9 teams competing on Wednesday nights and this has increased to 19 teams across Monday and Wednesday nights in the Summer 2021 Season.
Following a restructure of the Referee Coordinator and Games Controller positions last year, The PMBL has maintained a group of dedicated nightly staff members who work to drive the standard of the competition, with a focus on referee and player behaviour. Additionally, the implementation of Refbook, an online referee rostering system has streamlined the rostering process and allowed
the Referee Coordinator to spend more time focusing on referee development. Subsequently, referee coverage has been at a rate of 96%, which was only marginally down on last year’s rate of 97%. We will continue to try and improve this by providing incentives to referees as well through increased marketing to recruit more referees.
The beginning of 2021 sees Cory Tombides take on the role of competitions administrator following Gareth Allen’s departure from the position to build on what was a strong 2020.
