To Ensure the Boards of Basketball are Educated In, Aware of and Practising Best Practice Governance at Every Level of the Sport
Basketball WA have created a package of documents to ensure that all new Board or Committee members are aware of not only the key documents relating to their Association, but also their requirements under legislation including the Associations Incorporations Act 2015 and the Working with Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act 2004. By creating a
knowledge bank, Associations become more sustainable by ensuring there is not a loss of key information when Board members change and allowing new members to positively contribute to the Association straight away.
CELEBRATING NAIDOC WEEK
Due to the constraints of Covid-19, Basketball WA had to cancel the 2020 NAIDOC
Carnival, a decision made in consultation with our NAIDOC Basketball WA - Patrons Council.
Having received funding from the National Indigenous Australian Agency to assist in the carnival, it was decided that the funds could be used for a video edit highlighting the importance of what the 2020 NAIDOC message ‘Always was, always will be’ means through the eyes of Aboriginal youth.
Collaborating with Koya Aboriginal Corporation, a group of youth articulated their lived experience. We filmed their responses on the banks of the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) in Midland, a place of cultural significance to the Whadjuk Nyoongar people.
To Ensure the Sport has the Systems and Policies in Place to Effectively Govern its Activities and Programs
Basketball WA continuously reviews policies to ensure they are up to date and offering member associations the best possible guidance. In addition
to this review process, Basketball WA staff liaise with other State Sporting Organisations and Basketball Australia to proactively seek new and better policies and processes to support our Associations. During the Strategic Plan Basketball WA were pleased to introduce the Affiliated Associations By-Law, which clearly outlined the process for a new affiliate to join BWA while making it clearer what the ongoing requirements for Associations include.
