 COACH DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATION
Damian Barr Coach Education and Development Manager
2022 WAS ABOUT ACCESSIBILITY AND VALUE ADDING FOR THE
BWA COACH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
The ongoing COVID situation understandably had a huge impact on our ability to coach and play basketball in 2021 and as we headed into 2022 there was some lingering restrictions and lockdowns, all of which were lifted just as the 2022 WABL season began. This meant many coaches could now take the opportunity to seek out clinics and mentoring to further their own development.
The Community Coach course continued to available as an online platform with BA launching a centralised version to unify the teaching across all States and Territories. Using video examples and online resources coaches were able to receive an official accreditation from within their homes. In excess of 500 coaches have since been accredited via the platform from all regions across WA. BWA also introduced mandatory coach accreditation for all WABL coaches continuing the push to have our coaches accredited.
Along with the accessibility of the online Community Coach course, BWA was able to present several Club Coach courses across the state, with several being run in the Metro area, along with courses in Geraldton, Bunbury, Albany, Newman, Tom Price and Karratha.
The BWA Coaches Facebook page received record high engagement with daily drills, articles and videos. The available videos, clinics, skills and drills breakdowns continues to grow on the site with it becoming a valuable resource to all coaches across the state. We were also able to run the 2 day Association Coach course, which saw 35 coaches take the next step in their accreditation journey. With presentations from NBL1 Championship (both West and Australia wide) coaches Jonelle Morley and Ryan Petrik, sports
psychologist Sandy Gordon, dietician Simone Allen and 3 time AJC Gold Medal winning Head coach Andrew Cooper, our coaches got to hear plenty about what the next level looks like and what is required of coaches aspiring to get there. In all, over 400 coaches achieved Club and/or Association Coach accreditation during the year.
We were also able to partner with the Perth Wildcats to bring two clinics to WA coaches, Mike Kelly (Perth Wildcats Associate Head Coach) and Luke Brennan (Perth Wildcats Assistant Coach) presented a defensive masterclass to, what was at the time, the largest live audience of coaches ever to attend a clinic. Newly appointed Perth Wildcats Head Coach John Rillie also joined his staff to present a clinic just ahead of the Perth Wildcats season opener. Wildcats assistant coach, Luke Brennan also joined Tasmania JackJumpers assistant coach Jack Fleming to present a clinic during the U16 AJC at Warwick Stadium.
In December we were also very proud to be able to bring out one of the worlds best skill development coaches, the mastermind behind Basketball Immersion, Chris Oliver. Partnering with Joondalup and Rockingham we were able to put on a NoR and SoR clinic for players and coaches with Chris, both very well attended by players and coaches alike. We’re in the process of seeking other opportunities for high level coaches to be brought to WA, we just need broad support from the Associations to make the investment worthwhile.
