Coach Development & Pathways
2019 saw a changeover in role in the coach education space. Luke Brennan took an offer with the Perth Wildcats as an Assistant coach. Keegan Crawford stepped in and competed the year of 2019 running coach education.
In 2019 Basketball WA ran over 30 coaching course all across the state in the calendar year. There were 317 coaches accredited - 269 were accredited as Community Coaches, 35 as club coaches and eight as Association Coaches (Association Coach accreditations are still coming in as coaches finish their assignments)
77% of the courses run were Community Coach Courses. Basketball Australia rolled out new curriculum for the Club Coach Course and piloted an online learning resources to be rolled out in all states in 2020.
The Association Coach Course (Formally the Level 2) was run for the third consecutive year with a variety of guest presenters. Fleur McIntyre once again presented on Sport Psychology, Ben Ettridge on Building Culture, David Philpot presented on Concussion Protocols and load management. The on-court component was completed by Perth Lynx Assistant Coach Ryan Petrik and Joondalup Wolves WSBL Coach Charles Nix.
Regionally, BWA’s Development Officers have been empowered to roll out their own Community Courses. This has seen Community Coach Courses run in Albany, Karratha, Midwest, Peel and the South West.

SCHOOLS PROGRAM
2019 saw the infancy of the relationship building in schools.
BWA HP launched the Community Coach Course in high schools targeting students and basketball specialist programs. Willetton high school was the first school to get introduced to the program. The year 10 class was introduced to the Community Coach Course under the guidance of teach Deanna Black.
The great success of the program will
be expanding in 2020. The Club Coach Course will be introduced for year 11 and 12 students at Willetton High School. Additional schools including Saint Norbert’s, Woodvale, Rockingham,
Trinity and Bunbury Senior High School have all expressed interest in running the program.
CONTENT CREATION
The resource production space was a huge area of focus for coach education in 2019. The new HP style of play saw a massive need for additional video resources. 14 separate educational
videos were released through the programs YouTube page to assist coaches and staff in implementing concepts.
The Departments social media pages on Facebook has spiked to 1269 followers. The page aims to provide content to current and inspiring coaches. Clinics, videos and drills are all shared on the page, as well
as links to interesting articles, promotional pieces on BWA programs and updates on athletes abroad.
The YouTube channel currently holds over 87 videos looking to hit 100 very soon.
