Book of the Month: The Whispering Dark by Kelly Andrew
By BRittany amalfi
Delaney Meyers-Petrov is ready to walk in between worlds, but is she prepared to find out what’s on the other side?
The Whispering Dark is a dark, atmospheric story that tells the story of a girl ready to be seen as anything but fragile. But what she finds might be scarier than anything she could have ever imagined.
Kelly Andrew delivers a cap- tivating story about Delaney Meyers-Petrov, a deaf girl who is tired of being seen as break-
able. So when she gets the op- portunity to go to a prestigious program at Godbole University to be trained to walk in between parallel worlds, she jumps at the chance. Only, the mysterious atmosphere of the university might have other plans for Ms. Meyers-Petrov. She soon en- counters professors who won’t accommodate her disability, mysterious voices, and a pe- culiar upperclassman who just can’t seem to stay away from her.
Colton Price died when he was nine years old. But, after
a twist of fate, he woke up sev- eral weeks later to encounter a colorful, green-eyed little girl. So when that little girl coinci- dently comes back into his life 12 years later, Colton does what he can to stay away. But Colton quickly learns that he can’t seem to stay away from Delaney Mey- ers-Petrov. There’s something about her and the darkness that seems to follow her.
So when a student turns up dead, Delaney and Colton’s efforts to stay away from each other are foiled as they form a reluctant alliance as the pair dive deeper into the university’s dark secrets.
A Paranormal Thriller Set in The Shadows
I can’t lie here. Kelly An- drew’s writing is not just good. It is phenomenal. Andrew has crafted a beautifully vivid world that is set in the shadows and shows that one can find com- fort in the dark. The prose was beautifully vivid, and the other- worldly setting set in the Boston landscape kept me captivated from the very first page. An- drew absolutely made the at- mospheric setting a character in this novel, and it added to the story and Delaney’s journey.
Delaney Meyers-Petrov is a fantastic main character who doesn’t shy away from her curious nature. Due to her
being deaf, she is seen as frag- ile. Breakable. But this story depicts that she is the exact opposite. When dark events begin to occur on campus, Del- aney might be scared, but that doesn’t stop her determination to uncover what is going on. “Determined” is a good word to describe Ms. Meyers Petrov, and she is determined to figure out what is lurking in the shad- ows, especially when something in the shadows is calling to her.
The Whispering Dark is a dark, beautiful thriller, unlike any- thing I have ever read before. Kelly Andrew weaves dark el- ements, twisted secrets, and a slow-burn romance all into one story. This book will have you feeling everything all at once while peeking over your shoul- der to ensure the shadows aren’t watching you.
Also, Colton Price has my heart. That is all.
