November Shining Star: Benjamin LaPlume
It is with great pleasure that I write this letter of support for Benjamin LaPlume for the Shin- ing Star Award. Ben has been a fall athlete on the Newfound Re- gional High School Boys' Cross Country team for the past four years. He has competed as a Var- sity athlete for this entire time while also heavily recruiting for the team. And it is in the Girl's Team coach role that I have got- ten to know Ben further. Ben has worked hard, practiced, and participated for years, but in this current season, I have been the most overwhelmingly impressed by Ben.
At Newfound Regional High School, we guide our approaches by a set of core values: growth, perseverance, discovery, inde- pendence, and respect. Ben has evolved under these values and now exemplifies them daily. Like any other young runner, Ben had room to grow, and grow he did by shaving minutes off his time and rising to a top three runner on our Boy's team. This perse- verance has served him well as

he was part of the scoring team to secure DIII State Runners-up in 2021. He has discovered that running is a life-long pursuit and passion that is part of who he is and wants to be. To this end, he also competes at the Varsity level on the Boy's Track team. Perhaps, however, it is inde- pendence and respect that have shown themselves in their fullest form this year through Ben. I can not say enough about Ben's leadership and maturity with the team. These two attributes are lacking in the world today, and Ben’s sharp contrast to this lack of conduct is easily noted. He is both respectful to teammates and coaches. He is supportive of all the runners, no matter their level on the team. For example, he has actively slowed his pace in train- ing runs to encourage and
‘bring along’ others. He sets an example for the other team members in his responses to re- quests and his outlook on situa- tions.
Ben is a positive member of the school community. He serves
on SALT (Student Athletic Lead- ership Team) and the Tapply Thompson Community Center
grown leadership skills. In addi- tion, he has taken on marketing and communications tasks for the Basketball Team to show- case athletes. This initiative has included efforts to fundraise for improved equipment.
Ben has worked at the TTCC for two summers in the summer camp program working with children and honing his leader- ship skills. Additionally, he has coached youth basketball, track, T ball, and running club on a volunteer basis.
Ben is also a hardworking student-athlete with a GPA of 3.34. He has been on the honor roll every term of his high school career. He is particularly success- ful in World Languages, being awarded Student of the Year for Spanish three years in a row.
It is without any hesitation that I thoroughly recommend Benjamin LaPlume for the stu- dent-athlete Shining Star Award! Please do not hesitate to contact me for any further details for this recognition.
