schoolers and the elementary kids.
Another phenomenal event we discussed was the shadow- play the Puppetry class put on about the popular children’s book The Mitten. The Puppetry class reached out to Paul Smith and asked if the students had a specific book that they would like to see made into a play. The play was a big hit, and the kids loved it!
The experience that these schools provide is nothing short of groundbreaking. And what makes it so much better is how excited everyone is to participate. “Nicole will send me an email
asking if anyone is interested, and I’ll send it out to teachers, and within 5 minutes, we’ll have a lot of hands ready to help out.”
There is no doubt that the bond between Franklin High School and Paul Smith will con- tinue to grow at this rate. Many would think that this whole ex- perience is mostly only to ben- efit the elementary school, but the true fact is this is a two-way street.
Levesque told me that he has seen the confidence of some of these volunteers skyrocket the more they interact with the ele- mentary kids. So not only is this whole experience giving the little
ones an opportunity, but it’s also giving the high schoolers a new- found confidence in themselves. And no doubt, those elementary kids thrive off of hanging out with older kids! “Our students love connecting with someone who isn’t an ‘adult’,” Mazze said. “They get to hang out with the cool kids!”
When asked what their fa- vorite part about all of this was, both Levesque and Mazze had loads of things to say. There’s no way they could pick just one! Levesque stated, “For me, it’s that we’re getting out into the community, making learning in- teractive and hands-on, which
is so important. Also, the sense of pride from the kids that we see from engaging with the other kids is amazing. This is all a huge experience, and education is an expe-
rience.”
Mazze said, “It’s always good
for students to remember these connections from the elementary school, and I think that strength- ens the trust. Also, with all of this
going on, the elementary kids are now seeing all the opportunities that they’ll have in the future, and they get excited to see what the future holds for them. And, of course, building those connec- tions.”
Be sure to stay tuned to see what’s in store for these phe- nomenal schools as they work to- gether to strengthen bonds, help the community, and prepare for the future.
