Rep. Suzanne Smith Wins NH LAKES Prestigious Award
Reverend Sidney Lovett Memorial Award for Exemplary Lake Advocacy presented for the first time
CONCORD – Representa- tive Suzanne Smith was recently recognized as the inaugural re- cipient of the Reverend Sidney Lovett Memorial Award for Exemplary Lake Advocacy. On June 2, Peter Lovett, son of Sid- ney Lovett, accompanied by NH LAKES President Andrea LaM- oreaux and NH LAKES Policy and Advocacy Program Man- ager Michelle Farnham, pre- sented this prestigious award at a gathering of the NH LAKES Leadership Circle.
The life and work of the late Reverend Sidney Lovett (1928 – 2021) inspired NH LAKES to establish this award. Throughout his life, Lovett served many as a pastor, politician, and environ- mentalist. He served as the Chair of the NH LAKES Board of Di- rectors in 1993 and 1994 and was recognized as an honorary board member thereafter. In addition, he served five terms in the New Hampshire House of Represen- tatives. He sat on the Resources, Recreation, and Development Committee, where he advocated for New Hampshire’s lakes—in- cluding his beloved Squam Lake.
“Representative Smith is well-respected amongst her peers on both sides of the aisle and rec- ognizes that clean and healthy lakes are not a partisan issue,” explained Farnham, who has worked with Smith advocating for lakes in the state legislature. “She demonstrates compassion- ate, collaborative leadership in the pursuit of proactive, protec- tive environmental legislation and has volunteered countless hours in this endeavor.”
Representative Smith has served seven terms in the New Hampshire House of Represen- tatives, representing the towns of Hebron, Holderness, and Plym- outh. In fourteen years serving the State of New Hampshire, she has worked tirelessly to keep New Hampshire’s lakes clean and healthy by supporting and helping initiate lake-friendly legislation. She has served eight years on the House Resources, Recreation, and Development Committee, serving as Chair from 2019 to 2020. “It is in tribute to Sid’s enthu- siasm for education, politics, and the environment, his kindness, and his unparalleled ability to
connect people that NH LAKES established the Reverend Sid- ney Lovett Memorial Award for Exemplary Lake Advocacy,” ex- plained LaMoreaux. “And, we couldn’t think of a more deserv- ing advocate for our lakes than Representative Smith to be the inaugural recipient.”
NH LAKES is the only state- wide, publicly supported non-
profit organization working to ensure that our lakes remain clean and healthy now and in the future. The organization works with partners, promotes clean water policies and respon- sible use, and inspires the public to care for our lakes.
