July Brings Something Rotten to Lakes Region
By leslie sanDeRson
Something outrageous is com- ing to nearby Franklin. Save the date for Franklin Footlight The- atre’s big production of Some- thing Rotten!, a farcical, hilarious spoof of everything Shakespeare! Set in 1595, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom run a theater troupe, and Nick wants to find a way to top the wildly popular rock-star playwright, the “Bard,” who will do anything to maintain his status as England’s most fa- mous and successful writer. Nick consults with soothsayer Nos- tradamus who predicts that the future of theatre involves acting, singing, and dancing - some- times all at once. So, the Bottom brothers go on a quest to write a hit musical, and the plot unfolds. The Renaissance, Puritans, Shy- lock, exile to America - not seri- ous - but ridiculously funny!
The action is fast and loaded with gags, misunderstandings, mishaps, and tap dancing eggs. And the saucy dialogue has oo- dles of double entendres, puns,
and just plain old bad taste. A mash-up of Shakespeare and 21st Century Broadway, Some- thing Rotten! is chocked full of song and dance numbers, over- the-top Renaissance costumes, and wacky characters. The cast and ensemble members have special moments to shine on stage and bring the audience to unyielding laughter, making it clear that “nothing’s as amazing as a musical.”
Something Rotten! opened on Broadway in 2015, played for 708 performances, and was nominated for ten Tony Awards. The musical is another ambitious endeavor for Franklin Footlight Theater in a streak of success- ful productions like Disaster the Musical, Elf, and Little Women. Producer John Masse and Direc- tor Jule Finley lead a whopping 40-member cast and a produc- tion team of 20 - all of whom are volunteers.
Returning to the stage are many of your favorites from previous Footlight productions. Derek de Sousa slays it in his role
as Shakespeare. Devilishly hand- some in a doublet and breeches with an eye-popping codpiece, DeSousa rocks his way through the musical. When he sings Will Power, you’ll be tempted to jump onto the aisle to dance along. The hugely energetic Saige Granger continues her string of jaw-drop- ping performances as Nigel Bottom’s love interest Portia. Mi- chael Smyth nails Nick Bottom, and ditto for Asher Clark as his brother Nigel. Ashley Hanson glows as Bea, Nick’s supportive
wife. Other faves include Jack Finley as Nostradamus, David Bedard as Brother Jeremiah, and John Masse as Peter Quince.
The musical will be presented in the charming Historic Frank- lin Opera House, an intimate theater and live entertainment venue that offers year-round performances, 15 miles south of Bristol. Built in 1892 for town offices and a theater, the Opera House was restored in 2000 and is home to Franklin Footlight
Theatre where young thespi-
ans learn about and experience all aspects of theater produc- tion.
From Bristol Center, Route 3A south to Franklin’s Center Street takes about 20 minutes. How about dinner at Cielito Mexican Restaurant, Kath- leen’s Irish Pub, or Pizza Bene in downtown Bristol and then zip down for the show?
