Making a Difference at The Mayhew Program
By lauRa BRusseau
In 1893, the Groton School of Massachusetts started running a summer camp for underprivi- leged boys in New Hampshire. In 1969, it turned into the May- hew Program on Newfound Lake in Bristol, NH. There are unique places all over that create a positive atmosphere in their community, and The Mayhew Program is undoubtedly one of those unique places.
The Mayhew Program helps at-risk boys to overcome obsta- cles and rise to their fullest po- tential. Boys begin the program at age ten and follow it through until they graduate high school. Each boy is partnered up with a mentor that will help guide and encourage them over the years. Having mentors at such a young age can be a pivotal experience within these young boys’ lives as they learn and grow to be a part of society.
Most boys are referred to the program by school counselors
and teachers. Candidates are aged ten from a single-parent, low-income household. The re- view of referrals begins in April. If chosen, boys will begin the program in the sunny month of June.
In the first two years, the boys attend a twenty-five-day residen- tial summer camp where they partake in typical summer activ- ities, including hiking, boating, baseball, basket-
ball, swimming,
and a challenge
course! They
also have a work
hour where they
learn a skill and
can earn May-
hew Dollars to
use at the camp
store. It defi-
nitely sounds like
an excellent summer full of en- joyable outdoor activities where these boys can have fun and make new friends.
It doesn’t just stop there, ei-
ther. In summers three through six, the boys will participate in a five-day summer adventure that could include canoe trips, back- packing trips, and biking adven-
tures!
Boys over the age of fourteen
in the program can apply to work at Mayhew. The program will match dollar for dollar the salary and, upon graduation, present it in the form of a scholarship for higher education. The program keeps these boys in mind as they grow up and wants to help them learn all the valuable skills for be- coming an adult.
In the last two summers of the program, the boys will work on
goals for after high school and come up with strategies on how to reach them. There is so much the Mayher Program does with its campers at these young ages, and the positive impact it has can follow these boys through adult- hood.
There are a few ways to sup- port the program! First, you can volunteer at their upcoming clean-up days taking place Fri- day, May 19th, and Saturday, May 20th. You can also become a postcard pal and become a pen pal with the boys over their sum- mers at Mayhew! You can share their posts on Facebook. And you can attend their upcoming golf Tournament on June 19th at the Manchester Country Club, or you can make a donation online or by sending checks to PO BOX 120 Bristol, NH 03222.
