It’s almost time to welcome the summer season with open arms!
The weather is finally getting warmer, the days are getting longer, and it’s officially time to start planning for a summer of fun. Of course, nothing can compare to summers on the lake, especially here in New- found.
There are many spots to spend the warm months enjoy- ing outdoor activities. But with a summer of fun also comes a summer of safety. We want to ensure our health and well-be- ing as we partake in these en- joyable activities, so we should follow some essential safety tips this summer!

Boating:
Sunny Days, Safe Ways
There are a lot of boaters out on the lake this time of year, so it’s time to refresh on boater et- iquette.
Keep your distance. The laws require keeping 150 feet away from other boaters, wildlife, and the shoreline at all times. Be aware of all boaters on the water
Take any and all trash with you! We don’t want to be harm- ing the wildlife living in and around our lakes
No trespassing. Keep away from private properties
Check everything you need to on the boat before heading out onto the lake
Swimming
The lakes are a wonderful place to swim if allowed! How-
ever, there can be plenty of dangers when it comes to swim- ming.
• Never swim alone
• Always have sun protection
• Always make sure children are
supervised
• Wear life vests when needed.
And remember, adult life vests
do not work on children!
• Look out for signs that might
say “no swimming”
• Learn CPR for all ages
• Be wary of the weather when
swimming
Hiking
We all love an excellent sunshine-filled hike. But the summer is notorious for some brutally hot weather. Staying on top of things is crucial when heading out into the mountains.
If you're hiking alone, be sure to inform someone of your plans and route. Bonus points if you trust this person with your location tracker on Find My Friends!
Keep a form of communica- tion with you. Make sure your phone is fully charged or have a personal locator beacon on you • Take plenty of water with you
and keep hydrating through-
out the hike
• Wear sensible hiking shoes that
won’t impair your ability to
walk and won’t hurt your feet • Wear sun protection- sun- screen, hat, sunglasses, rash
guard, etc
• Bring some sustenance! A
few energy bars, nuts, other
snacks, etc
• Use insect repellent
• Walk in the middle of the trails and do not stray from the path • Always do tick checks at the
end of your hike
• If you are in a group, stay to-
gether
• Take breaks often, especially
in the summer heat
• Be aware of wildlife
• Have an emergency plan be-
fore you head out
• And, of course, know your
limits
Summer is here, and it’s time
to enjoy it. 2025 will be a sea- son full of activities, time with friends, and new experiences.
As we head into summer, let’s remember to stay safe and look out for one another so everyone can have a great time.
