The purpose of Read Across America Day is to encourage all children across the United States to celebrate reading. There is a special kind of power when a child falls in love with a story, and Read Across America encour- ages all kids to find that feeling. Today, and every day, kids can find so much joy and compas- sion through books, as there are millions of different stories out there. It just takes some influence to get kids to dive into the won- drous depths of reading. When young kids see others with a large amount of enthusiasm for books, they begin to see the joys of read- ing. And there certainly was no shortage of enthusiasm for the books at Paul Smith Elementary.
Twenty-five inspirational Franklin Highschoolers hopped on the bus and went over to Paul Smith to influence excited ele- mentary students for Read Across America Day. When the high school students learned about the opportunity, they jumped on the chance to volunteer to read to students in Kindergarten through third grade.
Nicole Mazze, Assistant Prin- cipal of Paul Smith, told me how positive the whole experience was for all of the students. “It was awesome,” Mazze exclaimed. “All of the students grabbed
