What has happened to the money that is supposed to be set aside from the purchase of fishing licenses in order to main- tain public boat ramps? I have launched from several ramps in the local area that are open to the public for access to NH wa- ters, I’m not seeing where the state has done much of anything to improve or even maintain the ramps. There are several ramps in the lakes Region that are in dire need of repair. I have been told that a portion of the money from the fishing licenses sold in NH is used to maintain these public launches, but I’m not see- ing it. I know for sure that several of the ramps that I have used in the local area haven’t been main- tained, repaired, or improved in the past ten years or more. I have done a bit of research on the matter and I have found through a simple online search that the state does in fact publish that
some of the money is supposed to be used for “boat access pro- grams”, what does that mean?? It seems very vague to me. I hope the state addresses these public access ramps in the near future. Using these substandard boat ramps can be high adventure at times, causing you to have to ma- neuver the trailer quite a bit and make several attempts to get the boat to sit right on the trailer due to the condition of some of these ramps.
Misuse of these ramps pres- ents a whole new set of chal- lenges. More than a few times while trying to launch my boat I have encountered people fish- ing, swimming, or parking on or in close proximity to the ramp, it’s usually no big deal, but every once in awhile you get some odd reactions when asked politely if they could relocate temporarily so I and others can use the ramp for its intended purpose. Most often, these people were very understanding and did just that,
but there have been others who were somewhat less enthusiastic. Then there are the ones who be- lieve that the ramp is a parking area whether they have a boat in tow or not. These are the ones who get very indignant about moving their vehicle so others can launch or recover, not a lot offunat1100pm,andtoaddto the drama, most of these ramps are not well lit, if at all. If you are fishing on or using the boat ramp for anything other than its intended purpose, is it really necessary to take a stance of non compliance? Please just move off the ramp out of the way and let
the boater launch or recover, and then you can resume whatever activity it was that you were in- volved with prior to that. It’s in the name people, “Boat Ramp”. Have some courtesy, don’t be “that guy” and block the ramp by parking on it, or so close as to render the ramp inaccessible, it’s a public access, not a conve- nient private parking spot. OK, enough of that, but please, don’t be that guy, thanks!
Full transparency, I haven’t been out on the water all month, it has been a very busy summer work wise, but it’s starting to taper off, so I am planning on
doing quite a bit of fishing in the near future. My favorite time of year is just around the corner, and I can hardly wait for the full moon to light the fall nights. If you are an avid Largemouth Bass enthusiast, don’t miss out on the week of the full moon for night fishing, it has been very produc- tive in the past for me. Whether fishing in Alabama, Louisiana, Texas or New Hampshire, some of my biggest have come during the late summer and early fall full moon cycles. As always, have fun and take someone fishing and pass on a life skill to the next gen- eration of anglers.
