October Shining Star: Mikayla Ulwik
Student Athletic Leadership Team, Student Staff Senate, Yearbook, and Co-Captain of volleyball are just a few of the activities that Mikayla Ulwick added to her already full aca- demic schedule to begin her se- nior year. She has a unique and valuable talent of time man- agement and organization that allows her to give quality to ev- erything she does.
Mikayla started on varsity her sophomore year as a setter while still setting on JV. Playing dual roles on both teams challenged and pushed her to the next level in her setting. Mikayla’s drive quickly exposed her desire to be a leader for her team off the court, too. So it was no surprise that she was named a co-captain her Junior year. She is always one of the first at practice to check in with me and to set up practice equipment. She made summer ball a priority and even took the initiative to implement a work- out routine that carried into the regular season. She only missed summer practice to take part in a student Marine Biology program in Puerto Rico to experience the field she hopes to work in some-
day.
Mikayla didn’t miss a beat get-
ting back in and coordinating her team to prepare for the season, whether it be by participating in the summer fundraiser, keeping the girls updated through group chats, pre-practice preparation, game day prep, or coordinating lip sync for Homecoming.
Coming off two back-to-back Division III State Champion- ships, the team has a lot riding on their shoulders to show that they are contenders for the top spot again. A lot of that pressure certainly falls on the leaders of the team. Mikayla and the other two captains, Dani Walker and Malina Bohlmann, certainly will face the challenges of performing to their best ability while guiding their very small, inexperienced team to the top of the division for another year. On top of the pressure of the team to perform as a setter for Newfound Varsity for the last three years, Mikayla is also on track to reach a per- sonal milestone of her own. She is notching away at her kill assists, hoping to reach her 1000 assists milestone before the season ends.
Mikayla and her team have a lot at stake this season. How-
ever, with leadership, composure, and communication from our three senior captains, Newfound Volleyball should have another strong season. Mikayla and her co-captains will finish up their career this season, but their hard work and dedication will be ex- amples to the ones who follow in their footsteps to continue to make Newfound Volleyball a contending team.
Mikayla will be missed, but I have no doubt that she will take all of the traits and characteristics that helped her to be so success- ful in her high school experience and use them in the next stages of her life.
