It’s that time of the year again when scarecrows start popping up in Bristol’s Central Square and beyond. Still, to make this fun and decorative fall event take off, residents, businesses, local schools, and organizations need to put on their thinking caps and build a creative or even tradi- tional scarecrow of their own.
The annual Scarecrow Deco- rating Contest began a few years ago after the square was recon- structed and since then, the Bris- tol Events Committee has gotten involved to help with promotions, logistics, and prizes for the event.
“It’s another great community effort showcasing why Bristol is a great place,” they said.
Before people start con- structing a scarecrow for fun or perhaps even business or group promotion, there are a few basic guidelines, however.
First of all, the scarecrows

should be constructed on a solid frame to ensure their stability and be somewhere between four to six feet in height. In addition, each scarecrow display should be “family-friendly,” and those on the town common are not al- lowed to have a political theme. Finally, scarecrows placed in Central Square must also have a tag attached with the resident, business, or organization name and contact information to be considered for a prize.
This year two $75 gift cards to local businesses will be awarded to some lucky scarecrow builder, but to be eligible to win one, there are a few straightforward requirements. Entry forms must be submitted and are available at Tapply Thompson Community Center, Minot-Sleeper Library, and the Bristol Town Offices. Forms may also be downloaded off the Bristol town website or can be requested by mail at bris-
tolevents@bristolnh.org. The forms may be submitted by mail or in person at the town offices or TTCC.
“Sending your registration form [to the committee] by email is also a great option; then you can send along your photo entry as well,” the committee said. “Submitting your photo on our Facebook page will also put you in the running for the People’s Choice Award!”
Scarecrows will be welcomed to the common beginning Oct. 1, but people can also submit a photo of their own scarecrow display to the Bristol Events com- mittee’s email listed above. All scarecrow entries, as well as the submission forms for prize con- sideration, must be completed and received by Oct. 23. Those with questions can contact the events committee at 603-744- 3354, ext. 136.

This scarecrow appeared in Bristol last year, and the town’s Events Committee looks forward to seeing more scarecrows show up for their annual fall display and contest.
