The Hidden Battles organi- zation put on the 22 For The 22 event on May 21st, and to say that it was a successful event would be an understatement. With about 220 ruckers coming out to show their support for veterans, the 22 For The 22 made for an excellent day for everyone involved.
Scott Hyder, the founder of Hidden Battles, said that the whole event was highly success- ful, and everyone had a great time. It also helped that mother nature was on their side! It can be rare that such a big event could go on without any problems, but that wasn’t the case for this one. “Absolutely nothing went wrong
during the 22 For The 22,” said Hyder.
The founder of Hidden Bat- tles told me that “this year was completely different, but in a good way.” For the 22 For The 22, the event is usually just the Hidden Battles network, but peo- ple came from all over this year. “There were a bunch of locals, but we also had so many new people,” Hyder informed me. “There were people from New Hampton, Bridgewater, Alexan- dria, and more. But some people came from Cape Cod and even South Carolina!” Clearly, the 22 For The 22 has become such a monumental event in the com- munity, and more and more peo-
ple are hearing about it and want to show their support. Hyder in- formed me that a student from Massachusetts who is originally from Ukraine came up to par- ticipate as well. “We had people from all walks of life,” Hyder said, pleased. From kids all the way to people in their sixties and beyond, the turnout was incredible. “It’s amazing to see people come from all over who want to be a part of our mission to support veterans’ mental health,” the founder said.
There were about 75-80 peo- ple who finished the whole course. One hundred twenty people did the 10k, and about 6-7 did the 5k. There were also 12 cadets from Massachusetts who came up and
did the 22k twice. The event truly showed dedication and what this mission means to people. And even though the day was full of blistered feet, the support was amazing.
Without a doubt, the commu- nity did come together to support the 22 For The 22. There were a lot of volunteers to help make this event go smoothly and to make it as pleasurable as possible! Hyder informed me that the after-party was fun for everyone. “Every- one just hung out and mingled after, and that is exactly what we wanted—to build a community.” Hyder said that he was “speech- less” from all the overwhelming support for the first time in his life.
“When veterans see the support of people coming out, it shows them that they’re not alone, which builds up that optimism.”
The Newfound community was nothing short of helpful. Hyder was sure to say that “we have the right cause, but we chose to do it in the right community.” If there’s anything that the peo- ple of Newfound know, it’s how to support an important cause by coming together.
