 SOLITARY MAN

be involved in environmental concerns with many activities, including his leadership of Bris- tol’s Conservation Commission. The musician has been reborn as a performance artist known as a “Solitary Man.” Carroll, as a musician, has enlivened Bris- tol’s annual celebrations by per- forming at “Old Home Days’, National Holidays and playing selections from his extensive rep- ertoire to celebrate Santa Claus’s annual arrival to the town’s Cen- tral Square. Perhaps the “face” of the town musician is the image most familiar to young children. However, for adults, there is another familiar persona.
Moms and dads are ac- quainted with Carroll Brown’s many roles as a mentor to their children. He has been a Scout- master and Little League umpire and has coached Newfound and Plymouth sports teams. During COVID, he volunteered to dis- tribute groceries and helped to develop guidelines for the Re- opening Taskforce. Given his many community activities, it was no surprise to area voters when he ran for Bristol Select- man in 2022. He won. One of his main local concerns is the resolution of issues delaying the construction of Bristol’s envi- sioned Public Safety Building. More recently, he ran for the state legislature. Again, he won. The
freshman legislator is busy con- sidering many issues, but his pri- mary concerns are appropriate
funding and cultivating an effec- tive relationship between parents and their children’s schools. His party, recognizing his expertise in environmental issues, has appointed him to the Fish and Game Committee, and he acts as clerk of that committee. He is also designated as a “substitute” on the Science, Technology, and Energy Committee, making him available to share his experiences in those domains.
By his own admission, Car- roll’s most rewarding face is that of a husband and father nurtur- ing a blended family. In Novem- ber of 1993, Carroll wed Diana Richard and welcomed his role as step-dad to the three children, Jon, Amanda, and Jenn, that Diana brought into their mar- ried life as well as his son, Chris. Carroll is quick to express his indebtedness to Diana for her advice and unstinting support of his musical endeavors and public service. When asked about his hopes for the future, Carroll ex- pressed his desire to spend more time with his family; considering this and the sweeping, humanity filled, panorama of his life’s story, some would argue that his stage name a “Solitary Man” should be taken with humor and the proverbial “grain of salt.”Cer- tainly, Diana would agree.
