NMMS Allied Arts Night
April 2023
By Donna RhoDes
BRISTOL – Students in Al- lied Art classes at Newfound Me- morial Middle School had their opportunity to be in the spotlight on March 9th when parents and the community as a whole were invited to an open house and concert to see all they have ac- complished in art, music, com- puter science, woodworking and so much more.
Principal Chris Ulrich said the students were very excited in the days leading up to Allied Arts Night, and rightfully so.
“You can’t test their progress in these programs as you can in math or science, so this is an ex- cellent opportunity for them to show parents and the community what Allied Arts is all about and how much they’ve been learning in their classes,” said Ulrich.
Tech Ed teacher Alicia Lynn had plenty of projects to present that night from her students in grades 6-8. First, there were pro- fessional-looking board games, complete with plastic game pieces fabricated through the school’s new 3-D printer. A new C&C Router also assisted with not only the games they created but several other wood-crafted projects, too. Sixth graders began learning many woodworking skills this year, and among their projects were some beautiful cutting boards. Seventh graders benefitted through a grant from the Department of Education that brought robotics to the mid- dle school this year, while Eighth- grade students also learned how to carve blocks of wood into ac- tual racecars, then powered them with CO2 cartridges.

class in Courage/Hope, Art, and Social/Emotional Learning were not only touching in the depiction of lessons learned but creative as well. For example, Hannah Up- perman of New Hampton was proud to show off her display which included a doll-like figu- rine that tells the story of how she learned to “step outside the box” and become more kind and
courageous. Others had displays touting positive attributes, paid tribute to patriotic military mem- bers, and encouraged people to be kind, respectful, and consider- ate of those around them.
Music students had a com- puterized display allowing visi- tors the chance to listen to music they created using “Flat” Nota- tion Software to write the theme
