Senior Project Highlights at Newfound Regional

"Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're proba- bly right." - Henry Ford
Once again, the seniors at Newfound Regional High School have been working on an exciting type of project that goes beyond the components of the classroom. The students have an opportunity to work on their senior projects, which hap- pens to be a formalized version of the Extended Learning Op- portunities that NRHS follows. From career-driven aspirations to passion projects that ignite a student's ambition to learn, these high schoolers have the freedom to pick something that makes a difference.
The senior project has been a one-credit graduation re- quirement for over ten years. It requires a research paper, a product to complete, a presen- tation, and a written reflection of the student's thoughts. With the amount of freedom the stu- dents receive to complete the senior project, it is viewed as an independent project that is bro- ken up into four quarters over the year. "Students can pick any topic they want, so every year sees a pretty big gambit of top- ics," Amy Yeakel, Director of Extended Learning for NRHS, said. "It could be some type of
career exploration or a type of passion project for the students," Yeakel continued. Yeakel went as far as to say that the topics that students choose are always in- teresting to hear about. From a student looking into the different areas of nursing to another re- searching the genres of film that lead to them making their very own production, the themes go on and on.
The students can pick some- thing they want to learn more about, enriching their knowl- edge of a subject that already interests them. Yeakel stated that a big trend in projects falls between science and art. She stated how one student is focus- ing on researching how the envi- ronment impacts your ability to learn. This student is working to give Newfound Regional High School’s soundproof rooms a total facelift, making them more suitable for different learners. They want to incorporate some- thing symbolic in the form of art in the rooms that connects some- one to music. For example, a red mural can induce passion and ambition, and blue can induce a calming presence.
There have been topics such as substance misuse, painting, an- esthesiology, books and literacy, engineering, genetic engineering technologies, and so much more. One of the students who wants to
go on to become an engineer has been able to sit down and speak with real engineers and learn so much. Students also opt to pick a topic they can teach elementary and middle school students. "You know, the younger students think these high schoolers are some of the coolest people ever, so they love when they come in to inter- act with them," Amy said.
And there is no doubt that those students are making an impact on the younger students with their lessons, but they also make quite an impact on the public. The senior project is not done with the intention of going to college. Amy stated, "The project focuses on transferable skills that the students can use beyond school and real life." The senior project teaches skills like time management, coordina- tion, reliability, communication,
