Get ready, everyone because I’m about to bring you back to the early 2000s. The time where that grunge punk rocker look ran rampant in the streets of not only New York City but all over the world. How to Kill a Rockstar by Tiffanie DeBartolo transported me back to a different time where rock music and the souls of musicians overtook the sleepy little world we lived in. As a punk music fanatic, this book spoke to me in more ways than one, and I believe it’s one of those books that will always stick with some- one because it had me thinking about the true meaning of music.
This enigmatic story follows the life of twenty-something music journalist Eliza Caleum trying to make it in New York City. After the tragic loss of her parents in a plane crash followed by some dark events in her life, Eliza stumbles upon rock leg- end, and her own personal hero,

Doug Blackman. The encounter turns into a night of revelations as Eliza finally finds the courage to pursue her dreams of music journalism, and then just a few months later, she’s headed to New York City to write for one of the most prominent music press out- lets in the country. Eliza is ready to take things one day at a time living in the city close to her gui- tar-playing brother and his am- bitious wife, but when she meets her temporary roommate—Paul Hudson, her brother’s extremely unhinged yet alluring bandmate, her life goes off the rails as quick as you can say “rockstar.”
Paul Hudson has always wanted to make it big as a mu- sician. But he’s always wanted to do it in a way that doesn’t involve compromising or selling his soul to the stuffed suits music hierarchy demons that own the big record labels. He knows he’s talented. But more importantly, he knows what he wants to do
with music, and it’s not just to entertain some crazy fangirls on stage every night. He wants
his music to mean some-
thing. Paul understands
the effect music has on
the people who need it
the most, including his interesting new room- mate, Eliza. Paul sees how music affects Eliza because when a song comes on, he sees how her whole body changes as soon as the first melody comes out. Maybe this is why he falls in love with her so quickly. And maybe his deep, soul-crushing music is why Eliza falls in love with him.
Either way, How to Kill a Rockstar is a book about love, loss, heartbreak, and absolute soul-shattering revelations that are found through song lyr- ics and musical melodies. There
aren’t many fiction books out there that speak to your soul and have you rethink your out-
look on life as you read through the author’s captivating words. Eliza and Paul’s stories are in- tertwined and it’s built upon loss and heartache so together, they can create something beau- tiful. Tiffanie DeBarto- lo’s book is for the ones who understand the
deeper meaning of music for each indi- vidual soul. Whether it’s for an escape, a revelation, or an in- spiration, the soft or hard-sounding melodies will al- ways be there. And I think all readers can see a little bit of themselves in the soul-searching Eliza Caleum or the unconven- tional Paul Hudson as they find their own meaning in the music.
