The combined Seventh and Eighth Grade Chorus performed a song fittingly titled “Lakeside Lullaby,” along with “Die with a Smile,” which was written by famed singer/songwriters Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars. For the Seventh and Eighth Grade band, it was “Andromeda Overture” and “Adrenaline Engines” when it was their turn to shine in the spotlight.
Select Chorus chose the up- lifting song, “Surfaces- Sunday Best” by Mark Brymer, to exhibit their talents while the evening ended with the Jazz Band per- forming two toe-tapping tunes, “Jammin’ with Charlie” followed by “Polar Vortex,” featuring a solo by Chase Cazeault.
NMMS wished to extend their gratitude to the adminis- tration, custodial team and staff chaperones for helping make the evening safe and successful and, most importantly, the students and parents for their continued support of Allied Arts.
in each grade level displayed a number of projects completed thus far, allowing them the op- portunity to be expressive at the same time through painting and other decorative additions. Among them were wood-burn- ing classes as well as a chance to build some creative cats and other wooden projects.
“I went to a lot of craft fairs this summer to come up with ideas for things they could make,” White explained. Students who participate in his robotics classes were demonstrating their skills that night as well. They showed how they have learned to not only build robots but to program them to perform specific tasks in line with this year’s Vex Robotics Challenge, “Rapid Relay.”
Seventh grader Leo said this was his first year in robotics after he decided to sign up for the class as “an opportunity.” So far he has learned how to build a robot to perform tasks assigned by Vex Robotics, which this year was to drive the robot across a playing field and then shoot a ball through a backdrop. Most importantly though, once a robot was built they had to program it to respond to directions from the hand-operated remote control.
Leo said the hardest part was making a robot sing.
“Yes, they can sing, believe it or not!” he declared.
He said he really enjoys the class and now might even con- sider a future career in robotics or engineering,
Walls and tables surrounding the cafeteria were also overflow ing with drawings, paintings, and educational projects done at all three grade levels. There was 3D art, paintings, sketches, and much more from students in Ra- mona Joyce’s art classes.
Wellness educator Eve Bag- ley’s students displayed informa- tional posters they made along with some artistic 3D “Food Trucks.” The posters showed how much they have learned so far about mental illnesses while others explained important steps and methods to perform CPR on adults, children, and toddlers.
As 6:30 p.m. neared, the crowd headed upstairs to the gym where Band Director Sarah Farver-Staub, Choral Director Logan Cormier, Accompanist Kathleen Smith, and their stu- dents eagerly waited to begin their performances.
Ulrich was proud to say that 58 boys and girls, making up 20% of the school population, participate in band, another 50 are also in chorus, while 300 stu- dents overall take part in the gen-
