How is it already September? This summer positively flew by, but at least we got to read some great books while the sun blazed down on us. My most recent read is perfect as the air starts to get that little crisp, indicating the first sign of fall. I Will Never Leave You by Kara A. Kennedy is a spooky paranormal thriller that is perfect for the ever-ap- proaching spooky season.
When Maya’s ex-girlfriend, Alana, mysteriously vanishes after hiking together in South- ern California, everyone seems
to think that Maya
knows way more than
she is letting on to the public. What most peo-
ple don’t know is that
Maya and Alana’s rela- tionship wasn’t all smiles
and happiness. Behind
closed doors, Maya was miserable and constantly feeling trapped in a toxic relationship. And on the
day that Maya works
up the courage to break
up with her, Alana dis- appears. But of course,
this is a paranormal thriller, and in paranor-
mal thrillers, ghosts are
most certainly involved.
Alana isn’t really gone.
No, she still lurks in the shadows, haunting Maya
just as she did when she
was alive, and she needs Ma- ya’s help. And if Maya refuses to help, then she might just go down for murder.
Kara A. Kennedy wrote an absolute treasure of a book. If I had to describe her writing in one word, it would be emo-
tional. From page one, I felt Maya’s emotions and feel- ings with such depth that I felt like I was telling the story myself. Maya is the type to keep her head down and go about her life, but as the struggles of being a teenager come about, Maya can’t seem to out- run all of the turmoil. She has gone through trauma no high school senior ever should, but the sad reality is that, they do. And that is what makes this book so relatable.
Maya is the embodi- ment of a teenager trapped under the weight of every- thing she struggles with. But this whole story is about her rising above that to get herself to a better
side. This is what is needed in Young Adult books: relatable teenagers and how they cope to defend themselves against the
tragedy of growing up. What teenagers want is to feel seen, and I think that I Will Never Leave You is just what that does. It is an excellent example of what a Young Adult book should be.
Yes, I know that some might say that being haunted by the ghost of your toxic ex-girlfriend and threatening to frame you for murder if you don’t help her possess someone else is “relat- able,” but that’s not the point! The point is the rollercoaster journey that Maya goes on to rid herself of the toxicity once and for all. It’s never an easy feat, and that is something that teenagers need to hear.
And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a good ghost story? So, if you’re looking for an
eerie yet exciting paranormal thriller with authentic charac- ters, pick up I Will Never Leave You by Kara A. Kennedy. You won’t regret it!
